The Department of the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Athens and the Department of Philosophy at UCSB are academic units world-renowned both for their list of professors and for the vitality of their junior research community.
It is the only philosophy program run jointly by two prestigious institutions in California and Greece. It is also one of the few programs worldwide to offer courses on Ancient and Modern Philosophy, while focusing on Contemporary Philosophy, and to provide a specialization in the Philosophy of Physical and Social Sciences, as well as in the philosophical issues that arise in the domains of Ethics, Technology, Gender Studies, and Literature.
The two-year program, with attendance at the campuses of Athens and of Santa Barbara, includes courses taught jointly by Faculty of the two institutions, as well as by Distinguished Affiliated Professors, offering a unique learning opportunity for students who want to engage with the perennial issues of philosophy, from ontology to ethics, and the challenges that exercise the contemporary world, from the possibility of truth to the meaning of life, and from the nature of personal identity, to the rational explanation of the scientific and cultural shifts that shape our time.
